What does "alpha version" in the context of alpha funding mean?

Back in the day, the term "alpha version" stood for a game where core gameplay was created, art assets are partially completed and supplemented by placeholder art.

Nowadays, "alpha versions" means a version of the game that is playable and represents the core idea of the game. The game may contain only basic art assets, the core game play is present, but many features are still missing. That being said, Tomes of Mephistopheles has a roadmap to follow. The game will have many more weapons and spells, more enemies, more loot, more locations, quests, etc. The player will not have only 1 sword, only 1 enemy type, the same dungeon, etc. Players will have an awesome game, with time.

Purchasing and Downloads/Updates FAQ

Does Tomes of Mephistopheles have a DRM solution?

No, the game is DRM-free.

Why does Tomes of Mephistopheles have a download limit?

Unlike some independent games, we are aiming at a AAA level of content. This increases our costs for downloads. Content delivery networks cost a lot and as the game will grow in size, so will our bills. So to keep things affordable, we have this in place.

OMG! My download links have expired because I didn't bother downloading the game after I purchased it, for two weeks. What do I do next?

Contact the developers at support /at/ kot-in-action /dot/ com and ask to reset the expiration date.

How will I get alpha updates if I exceed my download limit?

The updates will be provided as separate downloads. Each of the update files will have its own download limit. Please use the resources wisely, don't waste bandwidth.

Why do I need to create yet another account if I want to buy ToM directly from you? I am afraid hackers will steal my financial information.

Only a valid e-mail address and your name is required to register. You need to create an account in our e-Shoppe to prevent anyone else from downloading your games and so we can reach you over e-mail to let you know about new updates and patches. We do not ask for or store your credit/debit card information. All transactions are handled by PayPal or Dwolla once you press the CheckOut button. Our e-Shoppe is also secured by SSL so even your e-mail address is pretty safe.

Why is it more expensive to buy the game on Desura?

There no such thing as free distribution. Desura charges us hefty fee (I think it's hefty because currently Desura is nothing more than autopatching + storage for the developers, unlike Steam, that actually sells games rather well). We need to maintain our profit margin and therefore it costs more to sell game on Desura, to compensate for the distribution fee.

Game FAQ

Will there be multiplayer? What game modes?

Yes. Players can take their characters to or from singleplayer to multiplayer, back and forth at any time. Multiplayer servers can allow co-op for questing/building, PvP, or both at once for clan warfare.

Why are melee attacks slow/delayed? Combat was advertised as fast paced and fluid.

Player melee attacks are still early in development. We will be updating the melee attack mechanic to allow the player to charge or ready each swing, then release to get a more precise, well-placed attack. We're also keeping in mind that the player will want an intuitive way of choosing which type of attack he/she performs, and control of which way the weapon swings.

Will there be ranged weapons such as crossbows or thrown knives/axes?

Yes. Spells are currently the only ranged weapons, but we do plan to add more options for ranged players.

Skeletons are too slow. Are you adding harder AI?

Skeletons are a weak enemy, there will be more powerful versions later that don't rely on melee attacks, as well as faster enemies that you'll have a hard time keeping distance from.

Will there be more environments than just one dungeon level?

There are major plans for multiple dungeon levels. The game will progressively get harder the deeper you go and the dungeon environment will change. You will be given the option of using bind points to respawn at, which may require some maintenance.

Will there be support for modding?

If we have enough support from the community for this feature we would surely like to add it. But what is planned that is a little related is that the player will be able to rebuild dungeon areas to their liking after blowing into an empty area with bombs or other means. That will allow players to essentially create their own dungeon, for in-game purposes such as a secret clan hall or a place to set up an encampment to bind to, but not to go as far as create an adventure with scripted and placed AI. Though, keep in mind, things could change. There is no solid answer on this as of yet.

Will there be crafting?

Yes. And it won't be tedious.

Will players be able to place torches or other lights?

It all depends on performance. If a player is rebuilding an area, there will be some torch placement, but lighting takes a lot of overhead, so we can't allow the player to go crazy with lights.

Will there be fog of war on the map?

Yes. We will add fog of war so you can't see where you haven't been.
